Data Sciences in Industrial Mathematics Education at WPI
Associate Teaching Professor, Mathematical Science and Coordinator, Professional Master of Science Programs, Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Industrial problems involving large data sets arise in many settings in which mathematical modeling can be used in a powerful way. Master’s students in the mathematical sciences can bring a mathematical perspective to industrial problems that tend to be different from the typical perspectives of those working in industry. In the Mathematical Sciences Department at WPI, through our Center for Industrial Mathematics and Statistics (CIMS) we have industry-sponsored master's projects that focus on these types of problems. The logistics of these types of projects will be discussed, including details regarding setting up the project with an industry sponsor, faculty advising of the mathematics graduate students throughout the project, and the process of mathematical modeling in problems with large data sets. Recent project examples will be discussed with a focus on projects in the online and mobile advertisement impression markets.
