Kannan Sivaprakasam is a graduate director of the professional science masters in material science and instrumentation at St. Cloud State University. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He received his BS and MS degrees in chemistry from University of Madras and he finished his Ph.D. in chemistry from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1999. He was a postdoctoral fellow in University of Bordeaux from 1998-1999, Cornell University from 2000-2006 and University of Minnesota from 2006-2007. After a brief stint in pharmaceutical industry from 2007-2009, he joined St. Cloud State University in 2009. His interdisciplinary research group includes students majoring in chemistry, physics, biomedical science, materials science, electrical and mechanical engineering. His research work focuses on developing hydrogel for biomedical devices, use of synthetic and modified aluminosilicates as detoxifiers for nitrates, phosphates and heavy metals. He has 25 publications, holds 2 patents, and has given 25 invited lectures. He has been recipient of federal grants close to $2 million. Kannan has been teaching online courses since 2011 and developed online/hybrid course/contents for 4 different courses. He has also done 6 workshops on the use of instructional technology for online courses. He is part of campus faculty learning committee on flipping classroom/instructional technology.
